Dermal fillers are injectable gels used to restore volume, smooth lines, and enhance facial features. They are usually made of hyaluronic acid.
Hyaluronic acid is a molecule that naturally exists in the body. It attracts water molecules to the area it is placed, helping the skin appear hydrated and plump. As we age, the body stops producing hyaluronic acid. This is part of why we see volume loss in the face, and volume loss often leads to skin sagging and wrinkles. By injecting hyaluronic acid back into the body, we can restore volume, smooth lines, lift the skin, create definition, and improve symmetry.
The longevity of the filler depends on the client, the type of filler, and treatment area, however, they typically last 6-18 months.
Fillers with higher cross linking (thicker, more structured) that are typically used for creating definition tend to last longer. These fillers are tightly bound and generally take longer for the body to break down.
Clients who frequently engage in high intensity exercise, have long periods of sun exposure, or have higher metabolism may have a shorter effect. Injected areas that are higher-movement such as near the mouth may have a shorter effect as well, as the increased motion may cause faster breakdown of the filler.
Dermal fillers are considered a safe and effective treatment when performed by a qualified medical professional. As with any injectable procedure, there are some potential side effects and risks to be aware of.
Common side effects are typically mild and temporary, and may include:
These usually resolve within a few days to a week.
Less common complications can include:
These issues are often correctable and may be adjusted or dissolved depending on the type of filler used.
Rare but serious complications are uncommon but important to understand:
Your safety is our priority. A thorough consultation and careful injection technique helps minimize risks and ensure natural, beautiful results.
Results from dermal fillers are typically immediate. However, it is important to understand that for the first 1-2 weeks following filler injection, the area may be swollen and or bruised. Final results are typically visible after 2 weeks when all of the bruising and swelling is resolved and the product is settled.
